Spielberger, nicknamed "Killer" was inducted into the Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008 after three decades of service to the Athletics Department. He was a loyal football team manager as a student, and assisted with the track and field and softball programs for many years after graduation. He attended several World Games for the Deaf and Deaflympics as a team manager.

Spielberger attended the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, Va., where he graduated in 1975 as class valedictorian. He went on to study at Gallaudet, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1980. Spielberger overcame many obstacles in his life and always enjoyed rooting on the Bison, especially when Gallaudet traveled down to the Tidewater region in Virginia.

Years ago the athletics department renamed its annual top team manager award in honor Spielberger. The award recognizes team managers who make valuable contributions to their respective programs, shows a positive attitude towards players, staff and coaches and works hard to meet and exceed the coach's expectations.

Spielberger was the only manager for the football team in the 1970's and personally carried all the heavy blocking dummies to and from the practice field. He served 30 years as a Gallaudet team manager.
