WINCHESTER, Va. – Gallaudet University senior jumper
Hannah Wetzel (Fremont, Calif.) accomplished what she set out to do Saturday at the NCAA South Region Final Qualifier hosted by Shenandoah University in the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.
Wetzel had one final chance to try and qualify for the 2024 NCAA indoor track and field championships and she did just that.
Wetzel broke her own school record in the high jump when she won the event with a top leap of 1.70 meters (5 feet, 6.75 inches).
Wetzel's old school record mark was 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches) set last month in Salem, Va., at the Joe LaRocco Invitational.
Wetzel's 1.70 meters mark pushes her into the Top 5 in NCAA Division III women's high jump participants. Wetzel is in a six-way tie with some of the best jumpers in the country.
Wetzel placed fourth in the triple jump with a top leap of 10.83 meters (35 feet, 6.25 inches).
First-year sprinter
Oceana Brown (Miami, Fla.) won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.57 seconds which improves on her previous school record of 25.92 set back on Feb. 16, in Annapolis, Md., at the Navy Select meet.
Brown finished fourth overall in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.81 seconds after she posted a time of 7.91 seconds in the preliminaries.
