Six Bison earn CSC Academic All-District Women's Soccer honors

WASHINGTON  - The College Sports Communicators announced its 2023 Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Teams and Gallaudet University landed six student-athletes on the Division III team.

GU's honorees include seniors Courtney Gentzke (Honeoye, N.Y.), Ryane Smalley (Nicholson, Pa.), juniors Reza Mosher (Danville, Calif.), Lilian Nelson (Minneapolis, Minn.), Dekisha Smith (Hutchins, Texas) and sophomore Fernanda Forero-Tarquino (Boston, Mass.).

Forero-Tarquino, a education major, had the highest grade point average (3.94) among the group of six at Gallaudet, the world's only university with programs and services specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students. The other grade point averages are as follows; Gentzke (Social Work - 3.93 GPA), Smith (Education - 3.87), Mosher (American Sign Language - 3.86), Smalley (Mathematics - 3.75) and Nelson (Interpretation - 3.60).

There are 34 representatives from a United East Conference program as 10 teams were represented. Gallaudet, Penn College and Wilson College led the way with six honorees. Schools were limited to six nominations for this sport.

The last time a Gallaudet women's soccer player earned Academic All-District honors came in 2019 when Hannah Neild was selected to the District 2 first team for Division III. Neild is the only Academic All-American from the women's soccer program as she was voted to the third team in 2019. Gallaudet has 16 Academic All-America honors in its history.

Outstanding student-athletes are nominated for Academic All-District® recognition by current dues-paying CSC members and must meet high academic and athletic standards. Eligible nominees will receive Academic All-District recognition.

The title Academic All-American is reserved for student-athletes who perform at an elite level in their sport and in the classroom.

To be eligible for College Sports Communicators Academic honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at their current institution and be nominated by their athletic communicator/sports information director. New for 2023-24, student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games/contests played or must start in at least 66 percent of the games/contests/matches.

The Academic All-America women's soccer teams will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 20.
