Box Score PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. - The Gallaudet University men's soccer team began the 2022 season with an astounding 4-2 victory over the University of Valley Forge here Thursday afternoon.
A pair of Bison netted two goals each as the buff and blue began the season with a win for the first time since 2015.
Sophomore forward Mamboh Smith (Silver Spring, Md.) scored a pair of goals in the first half to stake GU to a 2-0 lead. Smith's first goal came at the 15:53 mark with a low shot past Patriots goalie Abner Gabriel Camacho (one save) in the right corner. Three minutes later, Smith recorded his second goal with a high centered shot to give Gallaudet the early two-goal lead.
In the second half, Gallaudet (1-0) picked up where it left off with a quick goal just 43 seconds into the half. Senior midfielder Kelly Grant (Hazelwood, Mo.) scored his first of two goals with a low shot in the left corner.
GU held the three-goal lead for the next 30 minutes before the host Patriots (0-1) got on the scoreboard with a pair of goals. Valley Forge's John Sumo (one goal, one assist) assisted on the first goal scored by Michael Kalapala at the 75:34 mark. Sumo netted an unassisted goal in the 86th minute to cut the GU lead to one, 3-2.
The Bison added one more insurance goal in the 87th minute when Smith found Grant for his second tally as the ball went into the lower left corner of the goal.
