Brewer nets first collegiate goal as Bison fall to Cairn in storm-shortened Homecoming game

WASHINGTON – A massive shelf cloud rolled over Hotchkiss Field on Friday evening as the Gallaudet University men's soccer team hosted Cairn University in a Homecoming matchup that featured the first collegiate goal for first year Bruce Brewer Jr. (Santa Fe, N.M.). The Highlanders defeated the Bison, 9-1, in a United East Conference contest that was declared final after 70 minutes due to approaching severe weather.

Gallaudet (0-12, 0-6 United East) kept Cairn (5-4-6, 3-3-1 United East) within one goal for much of the opening half after the Highlanders struck in the second minute. The visitors added two goals just over two minutes apart to build a 3-0 advantage in the 30th minute.

The Bison answered in the 33rd minute when Brewer fired a shot from the far side of the field that deflected off the sliding Cairn goalkeeper. The ball ricocheted high into the air before dropping into the net for Brewer's first collegiate goal. The unassisted tally was Gallaudet's fourth goal of the season and snapped a five-game scoreless streak dating back to Sept. 19 at Mary Baldwin University.

Cairn responded one minute later when sophomore forward Anthony Carabasi scored to make it 4-1. The Highlanders added three more goals before halftime to take a 7-1 lead into the break.

Cairn senior forward Alijah Miller, the United East Conference's leading goal scorer, completed a hat trick with two goals early in the second half to increase his season total to 13. Carabasi finished with two goals and an assist, while sophomore forward Elijah Ejiofor contributed two assists.

Sophomore goalie John McCabe (Norwalk, Conn.) made eight saves in the opening 45 minutes before moving to forward in the second half, where he recorded a shot on goal. First year Donovan Schneck (Columbus, Ohio) took over in goal after halftime and recorded two saves in 25 minutes of action.

The evening took a dramatic turn late in the second half when an enormous, dark shelf cloud stretched across the sky above Hotchkiss Field, casting an eerie shadow over the stadium as severe weather approached Northeast Washington, D.C. With the ominous cloud formation looming overhead, the contest was halted at the 70-minute mark and declared final under NCAA Rule 7.7.4, which recognizes Division III games as official once 70 minutes have been played and the game cannot resume that day. The Homecoming crowd of 164 was able to clear the stadium ahead of the approaching storm.
