GU men's soccer celebrates 6-0 win over Valley Forge

Box Score

WASHINGTON - It was a celebratory night at Hotchkiss Field as the Gallaudet University men's soccer team won its first game of the 2021 season with a resounding 6-0 shutout over University of Valley Forge.

Gallaudet (1-2) scored at will against an overmatched Patriots squad, who played defense for the majority of the game. Three different Bison scored two goals apiece as GU netted three goals in each half.

Junior Dylan Christoffels (Methuen, Mass.) got Gallaudet on the scoreboard in the 17th minute as he scored his first goal of the season off a corner kick assist from sophomore Tristan Torbett (Wilmington, N.C.). Christoffels received the corner kick pass and kicked the ball into the left upper 90 past Valley Forge goalie Troy Billingslea (seven saves).

It didn't take long for GU to score again as sophomore Jonathon Waterman (Fruita, Colo.) scored his first career goal, off an assist from junior Kelly Grant (Hazelwood, Mo.), in the 29th minute with a low hard shot.

Senior Raymond Mukhailov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) capped Gallaudet's first half scoring in the 31st minute when he dodged past a Patriot defender in the goalie box and shot a low shot past Billingslea. The Bison took the three-goal lead into halftime.

In the second half, the trio of goal-scorers netted their second goals of the season.

Mukhailov scored from 20 yards out, off a pass from Waterman, in the 65th minute as Gallaudet increased its lead to 4-0. A defensive miscue by the Patriots led to fifth goal for the Bison. A Patriots defender overran his dribble while trying to clear the ball out of the goalie box. Christoffels swooped in and got the loose ball and was left 1-on-1 with Billingslea before he fired home a shot into the net at the 79:22 mark. That was the end of the night for Billingslea as Abner Gabri Camacho came in off the bench to finish the game in net for the Patriots (0-3).

GU completed its scoring in the 84th minute when Torbett made a nice touch pass to a streaking Waterman, who went on the fastbreak towards the Patriots goal and beat Camacho with a shot into the lower left corner of the net.

The Bison defense completed its first shutout since Oct. 12, 2019, when GU defeated Keuka College, 1-0 in overtime, on the road. Junior goalie Shane Angel (Mechanicsville, Md.) made one save in net to earn his sixth career shutout.

Gallaudet's win over Valley Forge was the first for the Bison since Nov. 1, 2019, when they defeated Cazenovia College, 3-2, a span of 680 days. The six-goal output is the most by a Bison team since 2018 when GU defeated the Patriots, 7-0, on October 17.
