Gallaudet picks up first win at home with 3-2 victory over Cazenovia

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's soccer team jumped out to an early lead here Friday afternoon against Cazenovia College at a chilly Hotchkiss Field. The Wildcats came back to tie the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game but the Bison scored the game's only second-half goal to win, 3-2.

Gallaudet (2-13-1, 2-8 NEAC) celebrated its first win at home this season. In the process, the Bison climbed out of last place in the conference standings while the Wildcats (4-10-2, 1-8-1 NEAC) drop below GU.

Sophomore forward Chad Johnson (Gardena, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal at the 80:22 mark after a Cazenovia defender fouled Johnson in the goalie box to award GU a penalty kick. Johnson drilled the penalty kick past Cazenovia goalie Maurice Tessman (seven saves) for his ninth goal of the season.

The two teams scored two goals each in the first half.

Gallaudet got on the scoreboard, just 30 seconds into the game, when junior Sean O'Callaghan (San Diego, Calif.) booted the ball up to Johnson, who crossed it to freshman Donald Ognane (Libreville, Gabon) for the game's first score.

Two minutes later, sophomore Brian Espanto (San Antonio, Texas) lofted a pass into the goalie's box with his left foot to senior Elan Markel (University Park, Md.), who did a bicycle kick to pass the ball to Ognane, who split Cazenovia's defenders and shot the ball low past Tessman.

Cazenovia scored goals in the 17th and 31st minutes.
