Huber hat trick propels GU to its first win of the season in conference opener

Box Score

WASHINGTON - Senior forward Sean Huber (Orange, Calif.) was a one-man wrecking crew for Gallaudet University against Bryn Athyn College in a Saturday evening North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) men's soccer game at Hotchkiss Field.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound forward, muscled his way to a hat trick to lift Gallaudet (1-5, 1-0 NEAC) to a 3-1 victory over Bryn Athyn (2-3, 0-1 NEAC) in a physical and chippy contest.

Huber scored the game's first goal just two minutes into the second half. Freshman Ahmed Mahmoud (Rochester, N.Y.) raced down the near sideline and ripped a nice cross from the right corner to the center of the goal. The cross found Huber's foot as the ball got past Lion goalie Quentin Hager (five saves).

A costly penalty by Gallaudet's defense in the goalie box in the 66th minute led to a penalty kick, which was converted successfully by Edgar Rodriguez as Bryn Athyn knotted the game at one.

Gallaudet responded, 25 seconds later, after freshman Sean O'Callaghan (San Diego, Calif.) sent in a corner kick where Huber headed the ball into the goal at the 66:31 mark as the Bison regained the lead.

The Bison were able to add an insurance goal in the 83rd minute. Sophomore goalie Noah Means-Simonsen (Louisville, Ky.) booted a kick past midfield and found Huber, in stride, as he darted towards the Lions goal. As Hager came out to defend the 1-on-1 attack, Huber lifted the ball over the goalie and into an empty net as he celebrated his hat trick with an assist from his own goalie.

BISON TRACKS

  • Means-Simonsen made six saves
  • Huber led the team with five shots, all on goal
  • GU had one team save in the match
  • The Lions held a 20-12 edge in shots and 9-4 advantage in corner kicks
  • The two teams combined for 23 fouls and three yellow cards
