Men's soccer keeps postseason hopes alive with victory over Wells

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's soccer team kept its postseason hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over Wells College in a crucial North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game here Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Hotchkiss Field.

GU, currently fifth in the conference standings, is fighting for fourth place with one NEAC game left before the conference tournament begins in nine days.

Gallaudet (3-12, 3-6 NEAC) had to hold off a last-minute push by Wells (4-9-1, 3-5 NEAC) after the Express scored a goal, on a penalty kick, in the 87th minute. Wells got off one more corner kick before the final whistle blew and ended the game.

The Bison got on the scoreboard at the 28:19 mark in the first half when they converted their own penalty kick opportunity. Freshman Sean O'Callaghan (San Diego, Calif.) fired a rocket of a shot past Wells goalie Owen May (two saves). GU took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, GU added to its lead when sophomore Samer Abualya (Whitestone, N.Y.) headed the ball over to Tim Artinian (Henrietta, N.Y.), who was camped out on the right side of the goal, and placed his foot on the ball and into the back of the net.

Sophomore goalie Noah Means-Simonsen (Louisville, Ky.) made four saves in the win.

Prior to the start of the game, GU head coach Pedro Braz and the soccer program paid tribute to its senior class and recognized forward Sean Huber (Orange, Calif.) and defender Cody Zimmer (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and their respective friends and family.

BISON TRACKS

  • O'Callaghan led the Bison with three shots (two shots on goal)
  • Wells held a 12-9 edge in shots and 8-6 advantage in corner kicks

UP NEXT
GU will next travel to College of Saint Elizabeth (0-14-1, 0-8 NEAC) on Saturday, Oct. 28, at noon for the final conference game of the season.
