GU men's soccer celebrates first win of season and first since 2012

Box Score

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. - The first win of a new chapter of Gallaudet University men's soccer took place on the road Thursday as the Bison shutout University of Valley Forge, 2-0.

This is Gallaudet's first victory since it last fielded a team during the 2012 season when the Bison won 1-0 over Penn St.-Berks on Oct. 20, 2012. Three members of that team are on this year's team including seniors Eric Setzer (Middletown, Md.), Zachary Seguin (Royal Oak, Mich.) and Gabriel Carino (Bronx, N.Y.).

"The three seniors that were here three years ago seemed really pleased at the end [of the game] with this win. It was a long time coming," said Gallaudet men's soccer coach Pedro Braz.

Gallaudet (1-2-2) broke through a scoreless game in the 57th minute when freshman Brian Espanto (San Antonio, Texas) netted an unassisted goal. This is Espanto's third goal of the season, the most on the team.

The Bison added to their 1-0 lead when Conrad Baer (Fremont, Calif.) netted his second goal of the season off an assist from Espanto.

Valley Forge (0-10) goalie Alan Verone Jr. made eight saves in the loss.

BISON TRACKS

  • Setzer made seven saves in his second shutout of the season
  • Espanto led the team with six shots, four on goal
  • GU held a 17-11 edge in shots
  • During the 2012 season Gallaudet (3-13) defeated Valley Forge, 3-2, at home

QUOTABLE
"We have started slow recently. In the second half we realized we had a chance to win this game and we did. It always feels good to get the first win out of the way. Hopefully more to come. We have two important conference games this weekend and I hope family, aliumni and students can come out and support us this weekend." - Pedro Braz, Gallaudet men's soccer head coach

UP NEXT
Gallaudet returns home to host two North Eastern Athletic Conference foes at Hotchkiss Field this weekend. The Bison will go up against Penn St.-Abington on Saturday at 5 p.m. followed by a game with Bryn Athyn College on Sunday at 5 p.m.
