Box Score WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's soccer team kicked off the 2013 season under the lights Friday evening and played to a scoreless draw, 0-0, against Christendom College before an enthusiastic crowd of 200 at Hotchkiss Field.
Gallaudet (0-0-1) had scoring chances throughout the game but made a strong push in the second half when the Bison outshot the Crusaders 9-2. The Bison took two of their four corner kicks in the half during the 52nd minute. Sophomore midfielder Megan Calik (Conyers, Ga.) served in a corner from the left side and found junior Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden), who placed a shot on goal that was deflected by Christendom goalie Anna Forst (eight saves). The GU pair connected again, 13 minutes later, with two additional corner kicks, which ended with a Lindevall shot that was pushed wide of the goal.
Christendom (0-0-1) made a last ditch effort to end the scoring drought in the 89th minute when senior captain Morgan Kavanagh booted a shot towards GU goalie Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.), who made one of her three saves on the night.
The game ended in a tie and no overtime was played. The last time the Bison recorded a tie was Sept. 12, 2009, against Valley Forge Christian College.
GU outshot Christendom 13-4 in the game and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Lindevall and Calik tallied five shots each and had four and three shots on goal, respectively. The two teams got off to slow starts in the first half as GU took a narrow lead in shots, 4-2, into halftime.
The Bison will host Randolph College (0-1) on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 1 p.m. in a non-conference game.
