GU seniors go out on top as Bison women's soccer wins homecoming game

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Behind two goals by junior midfielder Monique Balcarcel (Lansing, Mich.) the Gallaudet University women's soccer team ended the 2012 season on a high note Friday afternoon as they beat non-conference foe Trinity (D.C.) University by a score of 4-0 during homecoming weekend at Hotchkiss Field.

Balcarcel's fifth and sixth goals of the year capped off what was a dominant performance by the Bison. She got on the scoreboard in the 30th minute on a hectic play less than 10 yards from the Tiger goal. Freshman forward Louisenie Philostin (Orlando, Fla.) dribbled into the right side of the goalie box, unleashed a rolling shot that deflected off Trinity goalkeeper Kyla Brown's outstretched hands. After working to get position on a Tiger defender, Balcarcel was there to clean up the rebound as she kicked the ball into the open net, giving the Bison a 3-0 halftime advantage. She put the finishing touch on the Gallaudet victory in the 52nd minute when senior forward Johanna Arrigo (Ewing, N.J.) worked the ball into the goalie box. Balcarcel then took a short pass from Arrigo and shot the ball past Brown (14 saves) who had come out of net to defend the pass. The score gave the Bison (5-14) the 4-0 lead that would eventually become the game's final score. Trinity drops to 0-13 on the season.

Arrigo ended her Gallaudet career in style as she contributed an impressive goal to the Bison victory. It came on a corner kick off the foot of junior defender Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.) that she headed into the Tiger goal in the 19th minute, stretching the Bison lead to two. Freshman midfielder Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden) also added a nice tally off of a Gallaudet corner kick as she kicked the ball out of mid-air and deposited it into the back of the net. The eighth minute goal got the Bison on the scoreboard and extended her season goal total to eight, good for first on the team.

Senior goalkeeper Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) ended her Bison career by picking up her fifth win of the season while posting a shutout in the process. She was perfect on the day, saving all four Tiger shots that came her way. Gulvas racked up 17 wins over the course of her career at Gallaudet and posted eight shutouts. She recorded 583 career saves, making a career-high in saves on Oct. 17, 2012 when she stopped 24 shots against Marymount (Va.) University.

The goal by Arrigo brought her career total to 18 over the course of 73 games. She added 10 assists for a total of 46 points in her career at Gallaudet. Defender Connor Crawford (Palatka, Fla.) also saw her Bison career come to an end on Friday. She saw action in 73 total games (70 starts) and started every game of her senior season. Midfielder Maggie Hoyt (Edgecomb, Maine) ended her Bison career having played in 71 games, accumulating two goals, on 13 shots, and one assist. Midfielder Maddie Morgan (Hockessin,Del.) started all seven games this season for the Bison before going down with an injury. In her time at Gallaudet, she racked up 12 goals and seven assists for 31 total points. She scored a career-high five points on two goals against Patrick Henry College on Sept. 12, 2012. Defender Shea Rasmus (Fremont, Calif.) is the last of six Gallaudet seniors whose careers culminated in the 4-0 victory. Over the course of her two-year Bison career, Rasmus accumulated 10 shots (four shots on goal) and an assist in in 28 games played.
