Gulvas makes a career-high 24 saves in 5-0 loss to Marymount

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University women's soccer team was unable to slow down Marymount (Va.) University in the early part of Wednesday night's non-conference matchup, giving up four first-half goals en route to a 5-0 loss.

Five different players were responsible for each of Marymount's five goals. The scoring onslaught ended under seven minutes into the second half when Marymount senior forward Katie Hamelin took a pass from senior defender Krysti Patient, made a nifty move to beat the Bison defense, fired a shot that made its way into the right-hand side of the net for a 52nd minute goal.

The Saints (6-6) got the game's scoring started on two goals that found the back of the net within a minute of one another. Freshman midfielder Melissa Fessenden scored first and freshman forward Alex Thomas was responsible for the second tally. Sophomore defender Danni Bankins, who was the leading shot taker for Marymount, seven shots, and freshman forward Danielle Canning also added goals for the Saints.

Gallaudet senior goalkeeper Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) was phenomenal in net, despite the five goals against. She faced a constant barrage of Marymount shots, making several highlight reel saves in the process. Gulvas ended the night with a career-high 24 saves. She made 23 saves her freshman season on the road against Wesley College (Oct. 1, 2009). Gulvas is the reigning NEAC Women's Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week. Gallaudet was outshot in the contest, 47-4.

The Bison have won two of their last three contests after beating Morrisville St. College, 4-3, in dramatic fashion on a last second goal, and edging Cazenovia College, 1-0, on consecutive days this past weekend.

Gallaudet is currently riding an 11-game losing streak to Marymount. The Bison last beat the Saints on Sept. 20, 2000, by a score of 3-0.

The Bison (4-12, 3-7 NEAC) return to the field for an away game against North Eastern Conference opponent Penn St.-Berks on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m.
