Gallaudet nets last second goal in thrilling win over Morrisville St.

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The bench of the Gallaudet University women's soccer team erupted Saturday afternoon at Hoy Field as Bison freshman forward Louisenie Philostin (Orlando, Fla.) buried the game-winning goal against conference foe Morrisville St. College with nine seconds left in regulation. The thrilling victory improves Gallaudet to 3-11 overall and 2-7 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) standings.

Philostin raced past the Morrisville St. defense and took a long feed from freshman midfielder Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden) to earn a 1-on-1 with Mustang goalkeeper Jennifer Zidzik (four saves). She quickly shot the ball past the sprawling Zidzik and into the right-hand corner of the net to pull of the last-second victory. The goal was the lone second half goal for the Bison and marked Philostin's fifth tally of the year. Her fourth came in the game's first half when she stole the ball from a Mustang defender leading to a breakaway score in the 35th minute.

The Bison scored early and often in the first half leading to a 3-1 halftime advantage. Junior midfielder Monique Balcarcel (Lansing, Mich.) got Gallaudet on the scoreboard initially when she scored an unassisted goal in the seventh minute. Morrisville St. tied it up when Lindsay Peri (one goal, one assist) scored off an assist from Jordan Nadeau. Philostin later put GU back on top and senior forward Johanna Arrigo (Ewing, N.J.) added an unassisted goal with six seconds left to give the Bison some momentum heading into halftime.

Gallaudet senior goalie Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) performed admirably in net as she made 11 saves, nine of which came in the second half. The Mustangs (0-11-1, 0-9 NEAC) outshot the Bison 22-13 on the afternoon.

The Bison won despite playing the entire game shorthanded due to a slew of injuries. In fact, Gallaudet fielded only nine players for a large portion of the match.

The win was the first on the baseball field for the Bison, who played on Hoy Field due to a home GU football game at Hotchkiss Field, and the first home win since Sept. 12 when Gallaudet beat Patrick Henry College, 5-0.

Gallaudet will look to win two games in a row for the first time this season when it takes on Cazenovia College on Sunday, Oct. 14, at noon at Hotchkiss Field.
