Box Score FRONT ROYAL, Va. – The Gallaudet University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking double-overtime loss at the hands of Christendom College Wednesday night. Junior forward Jean-Pierre Kanashiro's (Springfield, Va.) two second-half goals gave the Bison (0-4) the lead until late when the Crusaders (4-0-1) forced overtime and finished with a 3-2 victory.
The first of two 10-minute overtime periods came and went with no score. In the second extra period, Christendom's John Foeckler broke away in the 107th minute to score the game-winner for his team.
Christendom forward John Ciskanik scored in the ninth minute to put the Crusaders up 1-0, a lead they would hold onto through halftime. That's when Gallaudet opened the second half strong behind Kanashiro, who scored his two goals in the 49th and 59th minutes, respectively. The first tally came off a free kick that bent around Christendom's defenders and into the back of the net. His second goal of the game was his third for the season.
The Crusaders struck back with Ciskanik's second goal in the game when he found the back of the net with only a minute and 38 seconds left in regulation. The tie remained as the teams went into overtime.
GU was outshot 24-14 in the game. Kanashiro led the team with eight shots, five on goal, while junior midfielder Richard Spiecker (Rochester, N.Y.) added three of his own. Three other Bison had one shot each. Three Christendom players had five shots apiece, including the two goal scorers.
Freshman goalkeeper Eric Setzer (Middletown, Md.) turned in an impressive performance as he saved 11 shots. Setzer's counterpart Dan Mitchell made five saves for the Crusaders.
The two goals scored are the most in a game for the Bison since September 7, 2010, when the Buff and Blue lost 5-2 to Potomac State College, a junior college.
GU will next travel to New York to play Keuka College on Saturday, September 24, at 11 a.m. in a North Eastern Athletic Conference contest.
