Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University women's soccer team made the short trip north of campus on Saturday to participate in the Trinity (D.C.) University tournament as the Bison went up against the host Tigers. GU scored its first goal of the season but the Bison defense couldn't slow Trinity forward Kiauna Hemsley as she netted four goals as the Tigers won 5-1.
Gallaudet (0-2) trailed 2-0 at halftime and was down 4-0 before it got on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute. Freshman midfielder Katie Benz (Stafford, Va.) kicked the ball in from the right corner off a corner kick towards the Tiger goal. A scrum in front of goalie Courtney Haines (one save) saw sophomore Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) get a foot on the ball and shot it into the net.
Hemsley had a hand in every goal for the Tigers (1-2) as she scored four goals and assisted on another. She started the scoring in the eighth minute and then assisted Macee Wray on her goal 40 seconds later. The two teams played defense the rest of the first half as the Tigers held an 8-1 lead in shots.
In the second half, Hemsley scored her second goal on a long shot past Bison goalie Casey McCullough (Oceanside, Calif.) in the 54th minute. Erika Lara then assisted Hemsley on her third goal seven minutes later as her pass through the middle of the field led to a one-on-one with the McCullough (11 saves). Hemsley netted her fourth and final goal in the 78th minute and was quickly substituted from the game after her impressive performance.
Gallaudet had seven shots in the second half and eight total in the game and took seven corner kicks. Benz and junior Maddie Morgan (Hockessin, Del.) led the Bison with three shots apiece while Latham had two.
The Bison return to Trinity's campus tomorrow (Sunday, September 11) to face Mary Baldwin College at 12:30 p.m.
