Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet
University women's soccer team was in the midst of a defensive
struggle against the College of Notre Dame (Md.) on Friday evening
under the lights at Hotchkiss Field. The two teams were knotted at
1-1 for nearly 50 minutes but the Bison offense flipped a switch
and scored three goals in 13 minutes to put the game away as
Gallaudet celebrated a 4-1 win. The 2-0 start to the season is the
best in Coach Sarah Gumina's four years at
Gallaudet.
Freshman Lauren
Hostovsky (Medfield, Mass.) came off the bench in the
71st minute and provided the offensive spark the Bison needed. Four
minutes later, she scored her first collegiate goal off a nice pass
from sophomore Maddie
Morgan (Hockessin, Del.).
Hostovsky wasn't done as she added a second goal, with a minute
to play, off an assist from sophomore Shaq
McDonough (Pembroke, Mass.). Hostovsky was positioned
on the doorstep of the Gators' goal as she received a nice cross
from the right corner from McDonough. Hostovsky settled the ball
and turned and fired it into the lower left corner of the goal.
McDonough and Hostovsky attended the same high school and showed
good chemistry on the field.
Four minutes before Hostovsky's second goal, sophomore
Tiffany
Narciso (North Wildwood, N.J.) jumped into the scoring
act as she recorded her first goal of the season, second of her
career, off a loose rebound. McDonough blasted a shot towards Notre
Dame goalie Melinda Daugherty, who made one of her 13 saves, but
she couldn't secure the loose ball. Narciso was there to knock-in
the rebound in the 84th minute.
GU fell behind early as the College of Notre Dame (2-2) got on
the scoreboard in the 27th minute off a free kick. A Bison foul
allowed the Gators to set-up from 35 yards out. Sophomore
midfielder Kelsey Kempf booted a high-arching kick that tailed
right to left towards the Bison goal. Kempf got under it enough to
get the ball over the head of Gallaudet goalie Kara Gulvas
(Crown Point, Ind.).
Coach Gumina made good on another key substitution as she
brought in McDonough off the bench in the 20th minute. Down 1-0 the
Bison offense went on the attack. McDonough broke through the Gator
defense on a fastbreak and was 1-on-1 with Daugherty. McDonough
kicked the ball past Daugherty as it rolled into the lower left
corner of the goal from 20 yards out to tie the game in the 29th
minute. The goal was McDonough's third of the season.
Gallaudet returns to the pitch on Sunday, September 12, at 1
p.m. as the Bison welcome Randolph College to Hotchkiss.
