Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Averett University jumped
out quick on Gallaudet University in a non-conference women's
soccer game under the lights at Hotchkiss Field before a crowd of
150 on Friday night. The Cougars scored the game's first three
goals and never looked back en route to a 7-2 victory over the
Bison to end Gallaudet's three-game unbeaten streak.
The Cougars (3-2-0) controlled the game as they peppered the
Bison goal with shot after shot in the first and second half.
Averett outshot Gallaudet 19-1 in the first half and 24-5 in the
second half. AU midfielder Claire Armstrong led the way with three
goals, all unassisted.
Gallaudet (2-3-1) had several highlights in its first loss at
home this season. Freshman midfielder Johanna
Arrigo (Ewing, N.J.) recorded her first-ever multi-goal
game as she scored a goal in each half for the Bison. Her first
goal came in the 39th minute off an assist from senior defender
Brittainy Payne (Elyria, Ohio) to cut the Cougar
lead to two, 3-1, as the teams went into halftime.
In the second half, Averett scored four goals - two off the foot
of Armstrong - before Arrigo blasted home a fast break goal with 10
seconds left in the game. Arrigo fired a shot from the left side of
the Averett goalie box over the head of Cougar back-up goalie
Alicia McSweeney for her fourth goal of the season.
Gallaudet has scored eight goals in six games this season, which
is more than the five scored last year in 18 games. Half of the
goal output has come from the talented Arrigo, who stands 4-foot-9.
Freshman goalie Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.)
struggled for the first time in several weeks in net for the Buff
and Blue. Gulvas allowed six goals in over 60 minutes while she
made 13 saves.
The Bison defense did a good job to limit the Cougar shots
in-close but Averett capitalized on the long-range shots (15-30
yards) with the majority of its goals coming from far out. The
Cougars were able to sneak shots high over the head of Gulvas or
found the upper goal corner.
Gallaudet will aim to start a new unbeaten streak on Monday,
September 21, when the Bison host Trinity (D.C.) University at 7:30
p.m. under the lights at Hotchkiss Field.
