Gallaudet nets two goals as Seahawks fly past Bison

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University women's soccer team surrendered five early goals to visiting St. Mary's (Md.) College as the Seahawks handed the Bison a 10-2 Capital Athletic Conference loss on Monday evening at Hotchkiss Field.

The Bison (3-7-1, 0-4 CAC) got on the scoreboard in the 26th minute when freshman forward Shaquana McDonough (Pembroke, Mass.) netted her third goal of the season. McDonough broke through the Seahawk defense off a nice pass from junior Virginia Keeler (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and blasted a 20-yard shot into the upper right corner of the SMC goal. McDonough's goal cut the Seahawk lead to four, 5-1. SMC (5-6-0, 3-1 CAC) closed out the first half with four more goals to take a 9-1 lead at the half.

St. Mary's had eight different goal scorers in its third CAC victory of the season. The Seahawks were led by senior midfielder Sophia Esparza (two goals) and freshman midfielder Tori Eskay (two goals, one assist).

GU played a better second half as the Bison and Seahawks both scored one goal apiece. Keeler netted her second goal of the season off an assist from McDonough in the 64th minute. Keeler's shot beat back-up Seahawk goalie Lacey Johnson (six saves).

Gallaudet's two goals is the most it has scored since a 7-2 loss at home to Averett University on September 18. The Bison goal total is also a season-high for a CAC game this year.

SMC outshot Gallaudet 30-16 as the Bison held a 13-4 edge in the second half. The two teams only combined for three corner kicks. Gallaudet freshman goalie Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) suffered the loss as she made nine saves in 29 minutes of play. Junior goalie Casey McCullough (Oceanside, Calif.) closed out the game as she made five saves. SMC freshman goalie Grace Koplow (one save) started the game and played the first 24 minutes in the win.

Gallaudet will step out of conference on Thursday, October 8, when the Bison welcome Lancaster Bible College to Hotchkiss Field for a 7:30 p.m. game. That will be the last home game of this homestand for the Buff and Blue who will be on the road all next week.
