Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The final minutes of
Thursday night's women's soccer game couldn't go quick enough for
Gallaudet University as the Bison saw a golden opportunity to win
their first Capital Athletic Conference game in over seven years
slip through their hands. Marymount (Va.) University scored two
goals in the last six minutes of play to come-from-behind and beat
Gallaudet, 4-3, before a crowd of 125 at Hotchkiss Field.
This was the last CAC women's soccer game in Gallaudet's history
as the Bison prepare to join the North Eastern Athletic Conference
(NEAC) next season. The Bison won only one conference game in the
decade Gallaudet was a member of the CAC for women's soccer. GU
posted a 1-70 conference record in 10 seasons and was 0-7 in its
conference tournament appearances.
Gallaudet (6-12-1, 0-8 CAC) ends the '09 season with the most
wins since 2002 when the Bison won seven. The school record is nine
wins accomplished by the 2000 Gallaudet team. All six of the GU
wins this season came at Hotchkiss Field where the Buff and Blue
recorded a 6-5-1 mark.
Freshman Shaquana McDonough (Pembroke, Mass.)
led the way for the Bison with two goals, both in the second half,
while fellow freshman Johanna Arrigo (Ewing, N.J.)
added one goal and one assist. McDonough's 12th goal of the season
came in the 76th minute when she dodged a Saint defender and shot
the ball by goalie Gaby Preliezo (eight saves).
GU led 3-2 with 10 minutes left in the game but the Saints
mounted a comeback behind freshman forward Stephanie Flood.
Marymount tied the game in the 83rd minute when Flood beat
Gallaudet goalie Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.)
and had an open net. Minutes later, the Saints scored the
game-winner when Flood passed the ball to Elise Gebauer who
unleashed a 25-yard rocket into the upper left corner with three
minutes left in the game.
Marymount (2-13, 1-7 CAC) jumped out early on Gallaudet as the
Saints kept strong pressure on the Bison defense for the first 25
minutes of the game. The Saints received goals from Katarina
Hamelin and Rebecca Zimmerman. GU had trouble clearing the ball as
Marymount took advantage of the miscues. The Saints led 2-1 at the
half.
The Saints outshot the Bison 37-18 in the game (20-9 in the
first half). Gallaudet held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks while
Marymount got whistled for 11 offside calls.
Gulvas ended the game with 18 saves as she concludes her first
collegiate season with 198 saves, tops in the CAC. McDonough leads
the CAC in shots with 93 in 13 games and is tied for second in
goals with 12. Arrigo is tied for the CAC lead for game-winning
goals with four.
The game marked the final collegiate game for Gallaudet's two
seniors in defender Nora Torres (Delano, Calif.)
and midfielder Tanna Jo Kolb (Independence, Kan.).
Torres is a four-year letterwinner for the Bison as both received
special gifts from the team after the game.
The future looks bright for the Bison as the freshman class
accounted for 81 percent of the scoring and Gulvas was solid in net
for the Buff and Blue. Torres will be missed as an anchor on
defense but the talent is there for Gallaudet to make a splash in
its new conference next season.
