Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Time was running out on the
Gallaudet University women's soccer team on Saturday evening at a
wet and windy Hotchkiss Field against Lincoln (Pa.) University. The
Bison trailed by a goal with six minutes left but that is when
things swung around in Gallaudet's favor on Homecoming Weekend.
Gallaudet (6-11-1) scored two goals in the final minutes,
including a dramatic game-winner with 40 seconds left, to
come-from-behind to win 3-2. The Bison trailed the Lions 2-0 for
the majority of the game. This is the second comeback win for the
Bison this season as GU beat Washington Adventist University by the
same score back on October 11.
Freshman midfielder Johanna Arrigo (Ewing,
N.J.) scored the game-winning goal as she dribbled past and spun
around Lion defender Collene Cumberbatch and was left 1-on-1 with
Lincoln goalie Brittany Johnson (four saves). Arrigo netted her
sixth goal of the season when she kicked the ball to the right of
Johnson and into the back of the net. The goal set off a wild
celebration on the field and the sideline for the Bison.
Gallaudet tied the game at 2-2 when the Bison were awarded a
free kick, after a Lion foul, and created a scoring opportunity in
front of the Lincoln goal. Junior forward Virginia
Keeler (Ann Arbor, Mich.) took the kick and lofted the
ball to the center of the Lion goal. Freshman Shaquana
McDonough (Pembroke, Mass.) got a foot on the ball and
passed it to freshman Maggie Hoyt (Norway, Maine)
who scored her first collegiate goal with 6:12 left in the game.
McDonough scored the first of three unanswered goals by the
Bison in the 62nd minute on a fast break when she beat the Lion
defense and shot the ball into the left corner of the net. The goal
was McDonough's 10th of the season.
The Bison dug themselves an early hole as Lincoln netted two
goals. Gallaudet goalie Kara Gulvas (Crown Point,
Ind.) had a failed clear attempt when she kicked the ball off a
Lincoln player in the goalie box. The loose ball was then booted
home by a wide-open Antonia Davis for the first score, just over
nine minutes in. The Lions added a second goal in the 33rd minute
as Stephanie Anderson netted her 13th goal of the season with a
shot past Gulvas (six saves).
The two teams played a balance game as Gallaudet held a slight
edge in shots, 18-16, and took 14 corner kicks to the Lions' four.
Gallaudet is one win away from tying the school record for wins
in a season (seven) with one game left. The Bison will host
Marymount (Va.) University on Thursday, October 29, with the
opportunity to achieve that goal plus win a Capital Athletic
Conference game for the first time since 2002. The game is slated
to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Hotchkiss Field.
