ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The 2023 Atlantic East Conference swimming championships got underway here Friday at The Aquatics Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center on the campus of St. Mary's College of Maryland.
The Gallaudet University men's swim team set several personal best times and tallied 106 team points to sit in fourth place out of six teams after the first of three days of competition. Marymount (Va.) University sits in first place with 205 points followed by the host Seahawks (195) and Cabrini University (173) round out the Top 3 spots. Immaculata University checks in at fifth place with 74 points followed by Marywood University (15).
Gallaudet's relay teams finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.16) and the 400-yard medley (5:28.77). The 200-yard freestyle relay team time is over 22 seconds faster than last year's GU team in the conference championship. The two relays combined to earn 56 team points.
Senior Nick Hohrman (Fergus Falls, Minn.) placed ninth in the 200-yard IM event with a time of 2:32.41 to earn nine team points. Sophomore Bryant Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill.) finished 11th in the same event (3:05.03).
Freshman Thomas Burkhardt (Flushing, Mich.) finished 11th in the highly competitive 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.16 seconds. Fellow freshman Trent Mora (Austin, Texas) was close behind in 15th place (25.86). The two Bison set personal best times in that event.
GU cleaned up in the 500-yard freestyle as four swimmers placed ninth through 12th to compile 27 team points. The top swimmer of the group was freshman Sethan Rolofson (Gardner, Kan.), who placed ninth with a time of 6:31.93.

Gallaudet returns to The Aquatics Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 11) for Day 2 of the 2023 Atlantic East Conference championships. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. and the finals will be held at 6 p.m. The events include the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 800 relay.
