LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East has announced its Senior Scholar Athlete Award winners for the spring season. This award recognizes a senior who truly represents the student-athlete model by performing in competition, in the classroom and around the community.
Gallaudet University senior
Cotis Martinez (Turlock, Calif.) was selected as the men's track and field honoree. Martinez is the second Bison to earn a United East Senior Scholar Athlete Award this year and the fourth Bison to earn a United East Senior Scholar Athlete Award in the past two seasons. He joins this year's GU honoree
Blessed Mbogo (men's basketball) and last year's GU honorees
Liam Painter (men's track and field) and
Cassidy Perry (women's basketball).
The other award honorees from the United East spring sports include; Penn State Harrisburg's Brendan Henn (Baseball), Penn State Harrisburg's Madelyn Lehigh (Softball), Notre Dame of Maryland University's Sarah Generoso (Women's Lacrosse), St. Mary's College of Maryland's Quinnten Hatfield (Men's Lacrosse), Wilson's College's Tristian Worlock (Men's Golf), St. Mary's College of Maryland's Giselle Harris (Women's Tennis), St. Mary's College of Maryland's Devon Gorel (Men's Tennis), Lancaster Bible College's Jordan Yoder (Men's Volleyball) and Cedar Crest College's Mackayla Reed (Women's Outdoor Track & Field).
A standout thrower for the Bison men's track and field team in the javelin and discus, Martinez epitomized what it meant to be a Division III student-athlete. Martinez picked up a bronze in the 2023 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Outdoor Championships, with his best javelin toss of 44.21 meters to set a personal record. His top discus finish at championships happened in 2023 as he placed sixth. Martinez was also a four-year member of the Bison football team.
The Physical Education & Recreation major graduated with a GPA of 3.61, taking home CSC All-District honors twice and being named as a Chi Alpha Sigma inductee. In the community, Martinez worked with fellow GU football teammates to promote the National Marrow Donor Program. The Bison football players helped get students and community members signed up to "be a match" during an on-site day campaign at Gallaudet.
"Cotis has worked extremely hard over the last four years both on and off the field. I am very proud of his accomplishments here at Gallaudet!" said Gallaudet track and field coach
Byron Moore.
