GU men’s basketball team has educational trip to Atlanta

ATLANTA – On December 14-17, the Gallaudet University men's basketball team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to compete in two basketball games and visited three places; Martin Luther King Jr. Museum, Atlanta Area School for the Deaf and College Football Hall of Fame. The Bison met NBA retiree Mike Glenn.

Oglethorpe University invited GU to play against them on Dec. 15 and Oglethorpe hosted Gallaudet against Piedmont University on Dec. 17, both played at Oglethorpe University. Both games, the Bison lost both games, the score was 96-77 vs. Oglethorpe and 65-86 vs. Piedmont.

During the trip, when the team landed in Atlanta, GU went to visit the College Football Hall of Fame.  The Bison enjoyed the AT&T 5G Helmet exhibit and saw Gallaudet's football helmet on display along with information about GU being Home of the Huddle.

On the off day, Gallaudet visited the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, the student athletes had the opportunity to do panels and do questions and answers with the students. After the panels they had a brief basketball shoot around and took pictures with students and staff.

After that, GU went to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park to learn more about Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and the Civil Rights Movement. GU saw the birth home of Martin Luther King Jr. and spotted the Ebenezer Baptist Church where MLK Jr. co-pastored and was baptized.

After the Piedmont game, NBA retiree Mike Glenn, who knows the American Sign Language was a two-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-American men's basketball player at Southern Illinois University. Glenn played in the NBA for 10 years with the Buffalo Braves, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks. Glenn has hosted summer basketball camps for deaf and hard of hearing kids for over 40 years. Glenn had the opportunity to meet the Bison, gave the word of wisdom, and then took the pictures.

"It was a great trip for us to explore our country while being a proud member and representative of the Gallaudet University men's basketball team, the only college team in the world with Deaf and Hard of Hearing players! We are a strong believer that basketball is not just basketball but a way of learning, exploring, growing and becoming the best version of ourselves from the experience of playing basketball. We have traveled to Costa Rica, Oregon, Washington, Florida, Vermont, and Hawaii the past 10 years. Next year we look forward to expanding our growth to Africa in 2026," said Gallaudet Head Coach Kevin Kovacs
