Five Bison earn CSC Academic All-District Football honors

WASHINGTON  - The College Sports Communicators announced its 2023 Academic All-District® Football Teams and Gallaudet University landed five student-athletes on the Division III team.

GU's honorees include junior offensive lineman John Scarboro (Austin, Texas), junior wide receiver Kylar Sicoli (Austin, Texas), sophomore special teams (long snapper) Tyler Conner (Welsh, La.), sophomore defensive back Carter Johnson (McCall, Idaho) and sophomore wide receiver Jaylen Johnson (Redlands, Calif.).

Carter Johnson, a biology major, had the highest grade point average (3.96) among the group of five at Gallaudet, the world's only university with programs and services specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students. The other grade point averages are as follows; Conner (Physical Education and Recreation - 3.81 GPA), Sicoli (Business Administration - 3.70), Scarboro (Business Administration - 3.58) and Jaylen Johnson (American Sign Language - 3.50).

There are 20 representatives from a Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) program as four teams were represented. Vermont State University Castleton led the way with eight honorees. Schools were limited to eight nominations for this sport.

Gallaudet has had 20 CSC Academic All-District® honorees since 2012. Former GU standout Adham Talaat is the only Bison that has earned Academic All-America® honors (2012, '13) in football. This is Scarboro's second appearance on the CSC Academic All-District® team.

Outstanding student-athletes are nominated for Academic All-District® recognition by current dues-paying CSC members and must meet high academic and athletic standards. Eligible nominees will receive Academic All-District recognition.

The title Academic All-American is reserved for student-athletes who perform at an elite level in their sport and in the classroom.

To be eligible for College Sports Communicators Academic honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at their current institution and be nominated by their athletic communicator/sports information director. New for 2023-24, student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games/contests played or must start in at least 66 percent of the games/contests/matches.

The Academic All-America football teams will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024.
