GU posts first shutout of the season with 1-0 win over Southern Virginia

Box Score

WASHINGTON - On a picture perfect fall afternoon at Hotchkiss Field the Gallaudet University men's soccer got to celebrate its first shutout of the season as the Bison blanked Southern Virginia University, 1-0, in a non-conference game.

Gallaudet (3-4-1) got back into the win column and will use that momentum later this week to close out the month of September with an away contest on Friday.

The Bison got on the scoreboard in the 17th minute when junior Jonathon Waterman (Sebastian, Fla.) scored his first goal of the season on a fast break that started with a nice pass at midfield from junior Amjad Al-Siyabi (Muscat, Oman). Waterman took the feed and streakdown into the Knights' goalie box and got around goalie Dallin Chappel (six saves) and shot the ball low into the empty net.

The two teams were very even throughout the game. Both teams had five shots each in every half and finished with 10 shots each. Southern Virginia held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks as the visitors got whistled for 10 fouls.

GU goalie Bode Aggas (West Henrietta, N.Y.) preserved the shutout with three saves (two in the first half) as SVU (0-7-1) only got off five shots in the second half.

BISON TRACKS

  • Waterman led the Bison with seven shots (four on goal)
  • The defender almost had a second goal in the second half as his shot just went wide of the net
  • Gallaudet missed out on a penalty kick chance in the second half as the shot hit the crossbar
  • GU went 2-1 at home during the month of September
  • The Bison have already surpassed their win total from the 2021 season (2-12)
