Gallaudet begins the season with a sweep of Trinity Washington

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University softball team opened its 2020 season on a chilly Friday evening at home with a sweep of Trinity Washington University.

The Bison (2-0) dominated the doubleheader, with 17-1 and 14-1 wins, both in five innings against the visiting Tigers (0-2). 

Game 1: Gallaudet 17, Trinity Washington 1 (F/5)
Freshman Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) tossed a no-hitter striking out 12 in the process. Gallaudet scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back. Freshman Ariel Senics (Fishers, Ind.) finished with six RBI and two inside-the-park home runs, with one coming in the first inning and the other in the third.  

Catcher Jenny Mendis (Brook Park, Ohio) knocked in one run in the six-run second inning, while shortstop Kendall Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) doubled to center field to drive in two more scores. The Bison put the game out of reach with three more runs in the third to win game one. 

Game 2: Gallaudet 14, Trinity Washington 1 (F/5)
Gallaudet scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 14-1 victory in game two. With a runner on second, Senics hit her third inside-the-park home run on the evening as the Bison led, 4-0.

Freya Nola (Frederick, Md.) brought in two of the four runs in the second with a double up the middle. Hudson iced the game in the third with the Bison's fourth inside-the-park home run on the day. Gallaudet had nine different batters with one hit or more. Nola went the distance in the circle, pitched a no-hitter and fanned 10 batters. 

Freshman Christina Elsbury (North Canton, Ohio), Hudson, and Senics went 2-for-2 at the plate. Senics finished with three RBI, while Hudson and Nola chipped in two a piece. 

BISON TRACKS

  • Senic finished the day with four hits, including three inside-the-park home runs and nine RBI
  • Gallaudet pitched back-to-back no-hitters, struck out a collective 22 batters
  • Hudson was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, scored three runs and three RBI
  • The Bison were successful on all 33 stolen base opportunities

Gallaudet will host Clarks Summit University (0-0) tomorrow (Saturday, March 7) at noon for a non-conference doubleheader.
