WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University softball team dropped a rain-shortened conference game on Wednesday against Notre Dame of Maryland University as the Gators led 8-2 in the fifth inning when the game was called at the GU Softball Complex.
Notre Dame (Md.) jumped out early with five runs in the first inning and added two more in the second, as the Gators capitalized on Gallaudet miscues to score four unearned runs.
Gallaudet trailed 7-0 before the Bison batted in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore third baseman
Kinsley Bond (Beulaville, N.C.) put the Bison on the board with an RBI double, and first-year first baseman
Mattea King (Capitol Heights, Md.) followed with an RBI groundout.
The Gators added another run in the fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead before a thunderstorm halted play. After a two-hour delay, the game briefly resumed before being delayed again in the sixth inning for an additional hour. The game was later called off and canceled due to weather. Since the sixth inning never got completed the game reverted back to the last complete inning.
The buff and blue recorded four hits on offense as senior pitcher
Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) took the loss in the circle. Drolsbaugh (4-7) struck out four batters over five innings.
Gallaudet (4-9, 0-3 United East) and Notre Dame (6-8, 3-0 United East) were scheduled to play a second United East game on Wednesday, but that was postponed due to the rain and the frequent lightning in the nation's capital. A make-up date has not been announced at this time.
Before the game, GU invited two Kendall Demonstration Elementary students to join first year
Ciarra Tate (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and sign the national anthem.
Gallaudet Athletics and the softball team had a special guest on hand as United East Conference commissioner
Stephaine Dutton, who visited the GU campus today and met with student-athletes, coaches, staff, threw out the first pitch for today's game.
