GU surrenders lead late on the road in NEAC opener

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - The lead slipped away from the Gallaudet University women's basketball team right before the start of the fourth quarter here Tuesday night against Bryn Athyn College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener for both teams.

The Bison (0-3, 0-1 NEAC) had led for the majority of the game, they even held a 26-24 edge at halftime, before Brittany Vick (13 points) hit a 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter to give the Lions (3-1, 1-0 NEAC) the lead for good. 

Bryn Athyn went on a 24-8 run, starting with Vick's 3-pointer, and outscored Gallaudet 25-13 in the decisive fourth quarter.

Freshman guard Jakkisha Smith (Dallas, Texas) led the Bison with 12 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes off the bench. Fellow freshman Tawnecia Rush (Lawrenceville, Ga.) supplied 10 points off the bench as GU's substitutes outscored Bryn Athyn's bench by three, 22-19.

Gallaudet jumped out to an early 10-6 lead before Bryn Athyn closed the gap and took a brief 14-12 lead heading into the second quarter. The Bison went to work and outscored the host Lions, 14-10, as Rush scored six of her 10 points on three made field goals. 

Bryn Athyn was paced by three players in double digits led by Vick and Allison Warren (13 points) off the bench. Kristina Clark had a complete overall game as she tallied 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and one block in 36 minutes. Sarah Elizabeth Atunrase caused problems for the Bison down in the paint as she blocked seven shots and grabbed 12 rebounds.

  • Sophomore Kelli Barnes (Hope Mills, N.C.) scored nine points and grabbed 13 rebounds
  • Junior Kelsey Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds (10 on the offensive end of the court)
  • Junior Lawjen Ashmore (Fairbanks, Alaska) ripped down 13 rebounds and made three blocks
  • GU's largest lead was eight points, 22-14, at the 6:47 mark in the second quarter
  • The Bison held a 15-13 edge on second chance points
  • Gallaudet was quick down the court as it outscored Bryn Athyn in fast break points, 10-4
  • GU held a slight advantage in points in the paint, 22-20
  • The Lions scored 26 points off 36 Bison turnovers
  • The Bison close out the month of November with an 0-3 record

UP NEXT
GU will try and get in the win column on Friday night at Lancaster Bible College (0-1) at 5:30 p.m. in a NEAC contest.
