Bison ship up to Boston to begin new season at the Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. – The 2026-27 Gallaudet University women's basketball season opened with a long trip to Massachusetts to participate in the Brandeis University Invitational just nine miles west of Boston. The Bison opened their season against Husson University from Maine in the first meeting of the two schools in women's basketball.

The Eagles got the best of the Bison and won going away 92-54.

Gallaudet (0-1) jumped out to a quick start as junior forward/guard Mackenzie Schirg (Factoryville, Pa.) assisted on and then scored the two opening baskets of the game. The Bison would go cold from the field for the rest of the first and were unable to score while allowing the Eagles (1-0) to score 24 points in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the buff and blue held their own. After Husson scored on the opening possession, the Bison rattled off eight straight points thanks to a 3-pointer and a layup from sophomore guard Evangeline Diaz (Cedar Park, Texas), and three free throws from sophomore forward/guard Natalie Greene (Houston, Texas). The Bison and Eagles traded short runs the rest of the half as the Bison trailed 39-22 at the half.

Out of the halftime break, Husson caught fire from the field shooting 66.7 percent from the field in the third quarter. Despite the nearly 50 percent shooting from the field for the Bison, Husson's efficiency was unmatched as they added 38 points in the third to Gallaudet's 16.

The fourth quarter looked similar to the second, as the Bison once again found their defensive rhythm, winning the quarter 16-15. They ended the game with a score of 92-54 but may have found some pieces to build on for the consolation game.

GU had three different players in double digits as Greene finished with a team-high 20 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for the double-double. Diaz finished with 11 points on an efficient 4 of 6 night from the field as she made 3 of 4 from behind the 3-point arc. Schirg added 10 points, two boards and two assists.

The Eagles were led by Saige Evans who posted 24 points and 13 rebounds in just 29 minutes.
