Bison stumble on the road against Chargers, Gage nets 29 in loss

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team lost, 72-62, on the road Friday against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opponent Lancaster Bible College.

The Bison (13-10, 12-7 NEAC) and the Chargers (20-4, 17-2 NEAC) battled for the lead as senior forward Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) sank a two-point jumper to tie the score at eight just over five minutes in. A lay-up by junior guard Zamica Gage (Washington, D.C.) put the Bison in the lead but the Chargers fought back to stay within two points of the lead before eventually taking it over. Despite shooting only 36.1 percent in the first half, the Bison were able to keep the game close at the half only down five, 31-26.

The Bison weren't as fortunate in the second half as Lancaster Bible went on an 11-2 run while GU only made 1 of 11 shots in the first nine minutes. The Bison picked up their game but were unable to close the gap to less than six points as the Chargers won going away. Lancaster Bible had trouble holding onto the ball as its 22 turnovers led to 17 points for the visitors.

Gage had a breakout game in the second half, scoring 21 of her season-high 29 points. The junior guard was also able to pull down nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Senior forward Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the other Bison to score in double digits, with 10 points, as well as five rebounds and four assists. Freshman Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) came off the bench to add seven points and four rebounds.

Four different Chargers reached double figures in points led by Katy Stover's 21-point, six rebound and four steal game. Aubrey Folger recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

The Bison remain in Pennsylvania for the weekend to face NEAC rival Penn St.-Berks on tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 21) at 1 p.m. Gallaudet faced Penn St.-Berks earlier this month as it defeated the Nittany Lions 53-45. The Bison haven't lost to Berks since the 2012-13 season.
