Gage helps to lead Gallaudet to its first win of the new year

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team picked up their first win of the new year on Thursday evening as they defeated North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division opponent Bryn Athyn College, 62-44, in the Field House.

The Bison (3-5, 2-2 NEAC) trailed the Lions (2-6, 1-2 NEAC) by as much as seven points, 13-6, in the first half as Bryn Athyn's Kristina Clark scored eight of the team's first 13 points. Clark finished the game with 19 points for the Lions.

GU went to work and used a 10-3 run to close the gap and tie the game at 16 with 8:09 left in the first half. The Bison regained the lead, after it led early in the game, as freshman Kori Koss (Green Bay, Wis.) and junior Zamica Gage (Washington, D.C.) made a free throw each. The Lions knotted the game at 18 before the Bison closed out the half on a 15-3 spurt to take a 33-21 lead into intermission. The Lions turned the ball over six times in the final six minutes of the half as GU scored 23 points off 18 Bryn Athyn turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Bison controlled the second half as the Lions only got as close as eight points, 38-30, at the  15-minute mark before Gallaudet pulled away en route to the 18-point win.

Gage played a tremendous game, doing well on both ends of the court, as she finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, eight steals and six assists. Senior Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) also played well as she recorded her third double-double for the season with 11 points and 17 rebounds. Junior guard Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.) added 13 points and four steals. Senior Alexa Justus (Forks, Wash.) was the fourth Bison to score in double digits with 12 points while junior Danielle Morris (St. Louis, Mich.) pulled down eight rebounds.

The Bison will travel to Penn College (3-5, 2-2 NEAC) on Saturday, Jan. 10, to face the Wildcats at 2 p.m. These two teams met back on Nov. 19 when GU won 69-61.
