Bison pitchers set career-high strikeout totals in sweep of Trinity

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University softball team swept a doubleheader against Trinity (D.C.) Washington University on a spring like Tuesday afternoon at the GU Softball Complex as the Bison won 12-2, 10-0 in five innings. GU (6-4) only surrendered three hits in the first game and two in the second against Trinity (0-2), who was making its 2014 season debut. The Tigers were the home team for both games.

Junior pitcher Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) allowed only three hits, four walks and recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in the first game. Senior pitcher Rachel Sweigart (Big Rock, Ill.) accumulated a career-high 13 strikeouts and no walks in the second game on her way to a complete game two-hit shutout.

Sweigart was a force at the plate in the first game as she was a double shy of the cycle (single, double, triple and home run). In the first inning, she hit an inside-the-park home run down the right field line to score two runs. She went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored two runs and drove in four runs.

Freshman Emily Livermore (Havre de Grace, Md.) had two triples and a double in the second game as she went 3-for-3 at the plate. Junior shortstop Victoria Rainey (Danvers, Ill.) went 2-for-3, scored twice, one triple and one RBI.

Trinity pitcher Jade Perle pitched both games for the Tigers. Perle (0-2) kept the Tigers in the game as she totaled five strikeouts in both games and scored one of the team's two runs on the day. She also had a double in the first game and one of Trinity's two hits in the second game.

Gallaudet will next travel to South Carolina for its Spring Break trip where they will play six games against three teams at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex. Games start Monday, March 17, at 9:30 a.m. as the Bison take on University of St. Joseph (Conn.).
