Box Score MORRISTOWN, N.J. – The Gallaudet University women's basketball had another down to the wire win Tuesaday night as the Bison won, 63-60, on the road with a last second 3-pointer in a pivotal North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game against South Division foe College of St. Elizabeth.
The Bison (13-11, 10-5 NEAC) entered the second half strong, slowly chipping away at the Eagles' (15-9, 9-6 NEAC) lead throughout the entire half. GU trailed 42-33 at halftime.
With 2:11 remaining on the game clock, the Bison had brought the game to within five points, 60-55. In the next 1:44, the Bison scored five unanswered points, eliminating the Eagles' lead as the game was knotted at 60. With only six seconds left on the clock, junior forward Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) grabbed a defensive rebound, off a missed St. Elizabeth free throw, and dished it ahead to senior guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.), who had three defenders draped on her. With time winding down Weiss threw the ball up, in front of the Bison bench, and banked in a 3-pointer as the final buzzer sounded to clinch the win for the Bison. Weiss was mobbed by her teammates streaming off the bench in celebration as GU came through with the big NEAC win to improve its playoff seeding.
Gallaudet was led by senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) who had a game-high 20 points with eight rebounds, two steals and an assist. Peters was next in scoring with 14 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists. The third Bison to reach double digits was Weiss, scoring 13 points in addition to five rebounds, three assists and a game-high four steals.
St. Elizabeth saw four of seven players reach double digits in the game. Cheyenne Grant and Danesha Triplett led the Eagles with 12 points each while Triplett recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds.
The Bison remain on the road this week to close out the regular season as GU travels to Morrisville St. (6-17, 3-11 NEAC) on Friday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m.
