Bison drop first NEAC game to St. Elizabeth, 66-59

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University's women's basketball team played in a tough North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon as they hosted College of St. Elizabeth and lost 66-59 in the Field House.

Gallaudet (1-2, 1-1 NEAC) trailed by 12 points in the second half but the Bison whittled down the Screaming Eagles lead to three, 55-52, on a lay-up made by junior Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.) at the 8:44 mark. GU missed the opportunity to seize the lead as it turned the ball over four times and missed seven consecutive shots as St. Elizabeth (1-2, 1-0 NEAC) increased its lead back to nine, 61-52, with four minutes left to play in regulation.The Bison fought to the end but four straight turnovers down the stretch hurt Gallaudet's chances of picking up a second straight conference win.

Freshman Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) provided a spark for the Bison off the bench as she made 5 of 9 shots for 13 points and grabbed five rebounds in 14 minutes of work. Junior Zamica Gage (Washington, D.C.) scored 11 of her team best 14 points in the first half as she recorded four steals and two assists while Warren netted 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists. Senior Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the team with 10 rebounds and added three points, three steals and three assists. Senior Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) added six points, three rebounds and three steals and freshman Kori Koss (Green Bay, Wis.) netted five points, four rebounds and four assists in the loss.

GU scored 25 points off the 25 turnovers committed by the Screaming Eagles and held a slight 39-37 edge in rebounds. St. Elizabeth scored 32 of its 66 points in the paint led by Christine Grispart's 13 points off the bench as she made 6 of 10 shots from the field. Valerie Lasko and Alexandria Garcia chipped in 11 points each for the Screaming Eagles. St. Elizabeth led 37-31 at the break.

The Bison will next travel to Virginia for non-conference play against Randolph College (3-0) on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m.
