Gallaudet drops game against Lehman College on first day of GU Holiday Tournament

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's basketball team fell to Lehman College, 75-70, in its first day of the GU Holiday Tournament on Friday at the Field House.

The Bison (3-4) played back and forth with the Lightning (5-2) for a majority of the game exchanging leads four times and tying the score on six different occasions. Lehman managed a 32-28 lead going into the half.

The Lightning capitalized on Bison errors in the second half and extended the lead to 11, the largest of the game, with 13:40 remaining in regulation. The Bison narrowed the deficit five after scoring six consecutive points, but experienced trouble with fouls and missed free throws and were not able to regain the lead for the rest of the game as Lehman secured a 75-70 win.

The Bison were led by forwards Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) and Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.), who each recorded double-doubles with 18 points and 14 rebounds and 14 points and 10 rebounds, respectively. Senior point guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) dished out four assists and recorded a team-high three 3-pointers for nine points. Senior guard Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) pitched in 11 points and three assists. All eight Bison players that saw game action recorded at least two points in the game.

Lehman was led by Jennifer Navarro who had a game-high 19 points in the win. She was trailed by teammate Amely Del Rosario who recorded 18 points and five boards. Amani Lightbourne and Shalaya Nieves pitched in 15 and 14 points, respectively. 

Lehman will play Trinity Washington University (4-1) in the championship game tomorrow at 1 p.m. Trinity defeated Valley Forge Christian College, 68-38, in the other first round game on Friday afternoon. Gallaudet will face Valley Forge (1-5) in the consolation game set to begin at 11 a.m. in the Field House.
