Stergio and Hasty combine for 36 in win over Penn St.-Berks

Box Score

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet women's basketball team won its second consecutive game as it defeated Penn St.-Berks, 64-53, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) match-up Monday evening at the Field House.

Carrying their momentum from Saturday's win, the Bison (2-3, 2-0 NEAC) played an aggressive defensive game against the Nittany Lions (0-5, 0-1 NEAC). Gallaudet had 10 unanswered points, in the first three minutes, to start the first half. Senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) led the way for the Bison as she recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds before halftime. Gallaudet led 30-19 at intermission.

The Bison extended their lead in the second half to 16 points, the largest of the game, with 8:06 left in regulation. The Nittany Lions attempted a comeback and switched to a full-court press defense that forced 17 turnovers and cut the deficit to five, 58-53, with 2:04 left on the clock. However, fouls proved to be an issue for Penn St.-Berks as two players fouled out while the Bison went to the free throw line 23 times in the second half leading to 12 points. Gallaudet finished the game with a bang as senior point guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) dished a no-look bounce pass to Stergio for a lay-up putting the Bison up, 64-53, before time expired.

Stergio finished the game with her fourth double-double of the season with game highs for points (18) and rebounds (15) while Weiss had a game-high six assists. Junior forward Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out four assists. Junior guard Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.) had seven boards in the win. Freshman forward Isabella Hasty (Fort Worth, Texas) came off the bench and matched Stergio's 18 points in the win.

Point guard Keisha Robinson lead the Nittany Lion defense with a game-high five steals. Forward Nichole Young-Trapp recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The Bison will continue conference play at Penn St.-Abington on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m.
