Bison lose focus against Cazenovia

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Things were going well for the Gallaudet University women's basketball team earlier in the second half as the Bison increased a five-point halftime lead to a 14-point advantage, 36-22, with a little over 16 minutes left in regulation.

That's when things began to unravel for the Bison.

The visiting Wildcats from Cazenovia College began to chip away at Gallaudet's lead and used an 18-4 run to tie the game at 40 with eight minutes left on Saturday at the Field House. The two teams tied the game for an eighth time at 46-46 with 4:06 left in the half and the Wildcats continued to score en route to a 58-46 victory between the two North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foes. The Wildcats outscored the Bison 36-10 over the final 16 minutes of play. Gallaudet's last made field goal in the game came with 6:41 on the clock.

Gallaudet (2-8, 0-3 NEAC) suffers its eighth straight loss as the Wildcats (1-9, 1-1 NEAC) celebrated their first win of the season. In fact, Cazenovia snapped a 21-game losing streak dating back a year ago when the Wildcats defeated Wilson College, 75-55, on Jan. 8, 2012. Cazenovia lost its final 12 games of the 2011-12 season and the first nine games on this year's schedule.

The Bison were led offensively by senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) as she scored 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds, made three steals and two assists. This is the third time Stergio has matched her career-high mark of 22 points this season. Sophomore Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) added eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals and teammate Augusta Schriver (Middletown, Md.) was the third Bison to end the game with seven rebounds. Gallaudet led 26-21 at halftime.

Cazenovia was paced by Erin O'Malley and Megan McDermott who scored 20 points each and grabbed nine and 11 rebounds, respectively.

The Bison will host SUNYIT (2-5, 0-1 NEAC) tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 6) in another NEAC game at noon.
