WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team posted a perfect 4-0 record this weekend in the 5th Annual Worthington Classic as the Bison won the championship match 3-1 over Catholic University of America on Saturday before a crowd of 325. This is the third time since 2007 that the Bison have won the Worthington Classic, named after Gallaudet legendary volleyball coach Peg Worthington.

Junior outside hitter Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player while freshman middle hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Whited threw down 17 kills, 16 digs and five service aces in the championship match as Frowick added 11 kills and 18 digs as the Bison won 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19 over a tough Catholic (18-3) squad. Freshman setter Sarah Tubert (Burbank, Calif.) passed out 42 assists while senior Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) recorded 14 kills and 14 digs. Junior libero Mari Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) added 18 digs.

Catholic had two all-tournament selections in Claudia Jean and Bridget Kulesh as they led the Cardinals with 15 and seven kills, respectively. Jean had a match-high 24 digs in the loss that snapped a six-match win streak.

Gallaudet (18-6) advanced to the championship match earlier on Saturday with a straight set win over Shenandoah University, 25-21, 25-16, 25-10. Frowick highlighted the win with another double-double as she tallied 15 kills and 10 digs.

On Friday, the Bison defeated Salem College from Winston-Salem, N.C., in straight sets 25-14, 25-23, 25-15 in the first match of the tournament. Whited had 16 kills while Frowick made 12 in the quick win.

GU closed out the first day of the Worthington Classic with a strong 3-1 win (25-22, 25-10, 16-25, 25-16) over Allegheny College before a jubilant crowd of 350. Whited continued to build to her MVP resume with 16 kills, 17 digs and three service aces while Frowick chipped in 19 kills. Junior middle hitter Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) had 10 kills and six blocks. Tubert passed out a career-high 51 assists in the win.

Gallaudet will next host Gettysburg College on Wednesday, October 12, at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match.

Note: After the championship match the Gallaudet University women's volleyball program paid tribute to senior Paige Johnson as her parents, Johnny and Mariann, were in attendance from Texas to watch her play this weekend. The occasion marked Johnson's "Senior Day" as the program thanked her for the service and contributions she has made. Johnson was the 2010 NEAC South Division Player of the Year and an all-conference first team selection last year as the Bison won the conference title and went to the NCAA tournament.
