Faafiti's monster game helps No. 24 Gallaudet win 14th in a row

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – All-American forward/center Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) demonstrated on Sunday why she is one of the top players in Division III as she helped No. 24 Gallaudet University remain unbeaten as the Bison won 79-40 over Cazenovia College at home. The win pulls the Bison (14-0, 11-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference) within one game of tying the program record for consecutive wins at 15 set by the 1998-99 team. Gallaudet is off to its best start in school history.

Faafiti recorded her seventh straight double-double, ninth overall this season, as she scored a season-high 31 points, tied a season-high for rebounds (16) for the fourth time this year, tied a season-high mark for assists (six) and made seven steals. The senior was three steals and four assists shy of a quadruple-double.

Gallaudet led 38-24 at the half over Cazenovia (5-8, 4-6 NEAC) and used a 17-0 run in the second half to put away the Wildcats. GU shot 47.7 percent from the field (31-for-65) while Cazenovia struggled with a 28.8 percent performance (15-for-52). The Bison also held a 50-29 rebound advantage and scored 48 points in the paint and 31 points off 29 Cazenovia turnovers.

Senior center Nukeitra Hayes (Anderson, Ind.) finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) was the third Bison in double figures with 14 points to go with three assists and three steals. Freshman Tandy Lewis (Frederick, Md.) grabbed eight rebounds off the bench in 11 minutes of action.

Faafiti and Hayes are four points shy of accumulating 2,000 career points combined at Gallaudet. Hayes, who has played four seasons at Gallaudet, currently stands with 1,251 points while junior college transfer Faafiti has netted 745 career points at GU in two seasons.

Gallaudet remains one of six teams still undefeated in NCAA Division III women's basketball. The five other perfect teams include No. 2 Hope College (15-0), No. 3 Thomas More College (15-0), No. 4 Babson College (14-0), No. 17 Denison University (16-0) and No. 19 Greensboro College (13-0).

GU will next host conference foe SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, January 22, at 1 p.m.
