Box Score 2 OXFORD, Pa. – The Gallaudet University
softball team hit the road for the first time in the 2010 season
and was swept by Lincoln (Pa.) University on Sunday as the Bison
dropped the doubleheader 14-1 and 13-5 in five-inning games held at
the Oxford Athletic Association fields.
The Bison (0-10) were held to two hits in the first game as GU
scored one run in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman shortstop
Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) singled to lead
off the inning and moved up on a Lions error. Gulvas then scored as
junior third baseman Mandie Smith (Chicago, Ill.)
knocked her home on a RBI-single.
Lincoln (4-7), a NCAA Division II program, scored five
runs in the first inning and then exploded for nine runs in the
third inning. DeJuana Mosely led the way for the Lions as she had a
3-for-4 day at the plate in Game 1 as she knocked in four runs and
scored three times. She had a double and a triple to help Lincoln
to its third win of the season. Taylor Hines earned the win for the
Lions as she threw a complete game.
Gallaudet freshman pitcher Nicole
O'Malley (Fredericksburg, Va.) suffered the loss as
she pitched four innings where she allowed 14 runs (nine earned) on
11 hits, walked eight and had one strikeout.
In the second game, Gallaudet dug itself a deep hole as Lincoln
plated 10 runs in the second and two in the third as the Lions led
12-1 after three innings. The Bison battled back and scored four
times in the top of the fourth before the Lions ended the game in
the bottom of the fifth with one insurance run to end the game by
the eight-run rule after five innings of play.
Sophomore Michelin Barron (Frederick, Md.) hit
a pinch-hit home run to right field in the top of the third to
place GU on the scoreboard down 10-1. The Bison had runners on
second and third with two outs in the third but Lincoln Erin Rucker
got a strikeout to end the threat.
GU scored four runs in the fourth as the Bison started the big
inning with a single by right fielder Kaitlyn
Freitas (New Bedford, Mass.). O'Malley and Barron
followed and reach base on walks to load things up for catcher
Casey McCullough (Oceanside, Calif.). The junior
smacked a double to clear the bases and drive in three runs. Gulvas
then brought home McCullough on a RBI-single to center field.
Freshman Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) took
the loss as she didn't get out of the second inning as she
allowed eight runs on no hits, walked nine of the 15 batters she
faced, hit two and struck out three Lions. O'Malley took over
pitching duties in the circle for the Bison where she finished the
game. She threw one of her three wild pitches in the game in the
bottom of the fifth which allowed Rucker to score and end the game
due to the mercy rule.
Gallaudet will get back into its Capital Athletic Conference
schedule this week as the Bison travel to York, Pa., on Tuesday,
March 30, to face the Spartans from York (Pa.) College in a
doubleheader that starts at 3 p.m.
