25th Ranked Marymount Defeats Gallaudet

Gallaudet, behind the play of Nukeitra Hayes, came to play tonight against the nation's 25th ranked team, Marymount, playing even for the first 12 minutes of the game. With 8:25 left in the first half, Gallaudet and Marymount were even 14-14.

At that point Marymount went on a 9-0 run and Gallaudet couldn't get back into single digits. With two minutes left in the first half, Gallaudet was down 33-23 behind 14 points by Nukeitra Hayes.  Most of the Gallaudet points came off fast breaks when they broke the Marymount press. Marymount closed the half with a 6-2 run to make it 39-25.

Marymount showed in the second half why they are one of the nation's best teams.  They came out with a 16-4 run in the first 7 minutes of the half to go up 55-29. One of the keys to the game was Marymount was able to get open for 3-pointers, sinking a total of 8 for the game. The final score was Marymount 77 Gallaudet 45.

Hayes score 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had 2 blocks.  Delasha Singleton scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.  Ursa Rewolinski grabbed 13 rebounds. For the game, Gallaudet outhustled the most taller Marymount team.  On the boards, Gallaudet grabbed 46 team rebounds to 47 for Marymount.

After the game, Gallaudet Head Coach Kevin Cook explained what went wrong tonight.  "Basketball is a game of runs and unfortunately we allowed Marymount one significant run in each half. It is truly quite simple- we played 'giveaway' with 29 turnovers and allowed Marymount too many second shots."

Coach Cook assured Bison fans, the team will continue to play hard the rest of the season.  "The score and current record may not show it, but I am with these young ladies everyday, and our attitudes are good and we are improving.  As for Marymount, they are an NCAA tournament team that plays with consistency and high energy. Their biggest attribute is they play so doggone hard every possession."

Gallaudet is now 5-12.  Their next game will be Saturday afternoon at the Field House as part of Alumni Madness Day.  The game will begin at 2 pm, not 6 pm as listed on the fliers.
