WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Bison softball team continued its season
after a week-long hiatus for spring break against Columbia Union.
The visitors took both games, 11-1, 23-9.
Game One
Gallaudet did not get on board until the bottom of the fourth,
with the score already 11-0. Lori Hower hit a RBI
double to bring Keri Schmidt home and deny the
visitors a shutout.
To date, Schmidt tops the Bison batting list with a .516
average, producing 16 hits in 31 at bats. Catcher Kallie Williams has
a .469 average from 15 hits in 32 trips to the plate. Four Bison
are at .400 or better (the other two are Amanda Smith and Caitlin
Mosholder), with five others at .300 or stronger.
Colleen
Tighe, who struck out three batters over five innings of work,
has pushed her total strikeouts on the season to 42, with a 5.63
ERA to top the Bison. The loss in the first game today gave her a
2-5 record.
Game Two
Gallaudet jumped ahead to a 5-1 lead off RBI doubles by Williams
and Schmidt in the first two innings. Columbia Union then answered
with a nine-run third inning off hot bats and keeping the bases
loaded until a ground-out ended the inning.
The Bison would score again in the fourth, bringing in another
three runs off RBIs by Mosholder and Colleen Caverly.
Williams also added another RBI in this inning to close the gap to
within seven runs (16-9). A Columbia Union home run plus streaky
hitting put the game away with seven more runs in the top of the
sixth.
Kallie Williams finished with five RBI from a 3-for-4 outing.
Pitcher Jenna
Owens (1-3) struck out two batters over a complete
six-inning game of work.
At the end of game two, Williams and Schmidt finished with .500
averages, tied for the top spot for Gallaudet's offensive
production.
The Bison
(4-7-1, 0-2 CAC) take on the Eagles of Mary Washington on
Wednesday, March 26 to resume conference play. The first pitch is
set for 2:30 p.m.
