ST.MARY'S CITY- Sophomore guard Kiely Murphy
collected a career-high 19 points in leading the St. Mary's
(Md.) College women's basketball team to a series sweep of
Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic
Conference.
Murphy was the
only player in double digits for the Seahawks (10-11, 5-7 CAC) as
she went 6-of-8 from downtown. St. Mary's controlled the
tempo right from the opening tip-off, holding a lead of 10 or more
from the 9:01mark in the first half and onward for the
remainder of the game.
The Seahawks took
a 32-11 halftime advantage and Murphy led all players with 10
points off the bench. Gallaudet's senior guard Tamijo
Foronda (Lake
Elsinore, CA/CaliforniaSchool for the Deaf (Riverside) paced the Bison with five
points and four boards.
SMCM held
Gallaudet to only four field goals in the first half and 11 for the
game, while the Seahawks made 50% of their 14 attempted
three-pointers for the contest.
Foronda, who
finished with 11 points and a game-high eight boards, helped the
Bison control the glass with a 42-34 advantage on the
boards.
St. Mary's
defense forced 34 Gallaudet turnovers and the Seahawks capitalized
by notching 27 points. The Seahawks also received 30 points
from their three bench players.
SMCM's
senior guard Amanda Ballute was recognized on Senior Day
prior to the start of the game for her contributions to the
Seahawks on and off the court. Ballute finished today's
contest with game-highs of four assists and four steals. Junior
guard Megan Uglik grabbed six rebounds for
the Seahawks, while freshman guard Stephanie
Saint-Aubin chipped in eight points
and four steals.
The Bison (3-18,
0-12 CAC) will host Catholic University(14-9, 6-6 CAC) on
Valentine's Day at 6:00.
