SMITHFIELD, Va. – Facing cold temperatures and strong winds, the Gallaudet University women's triathlon team demonstrated resilience and determination at the Smithfield Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, competing head-to-head with Warren Wilson College in a challenging spring race.

The event began with a 300-yard indoor swim before athletes transitioned outdoors into blustery conditions. Competitors then tackled a demanding 10-mile bike course marked by headwinds and hills, followed by a 5K (3.1-mile) run through the town.

First year Hope MacPeek (Russellville, Ark.) led the Bison in an impressive collegiate debut, finishing fifth overall with a time of 1:19:55. She paced a young Gallaudet squad that continued to show promise throughout the race.

MacPeek was followed by sophomore Ashley Corcoran (Broussard, La.) (1:22:07) and first year Melissa Eicher (Wolcottville, Ind.), who completed her first triathlon in 1:22:55. First year Melany Salcedo Benavides (Woodbridge, Va.) crossed the line in 1:26:26, while first year Adelle Patton (Puyallup, Wash.) rounded out the Bison finishers with a time of 1:33:45.

Warren Wilson secured the team victory with 37 points, led by Natalie Hesler (1:05:17), Elena Wheeler (1:06:27), Sarina Maki (1:07:16), and Taylor Knops (1:24:04). Gallaudet finished with 18 points in the team standings.

Despite the outcome, the Bison showcased growth and perseverance in difficult racing conditions. With a roster featuring several first-time competitors, the race marked a strong conclusion to the academic year and provided valuable experience for the developing program.

Gallaudet will return to competition in Fall 2026, with the upcoming race schedule set to be announced this summer.
