Corcoran Completes First Half Ironman at Eagleman 70.3

CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Gallaudet University triathlete made a significant leap in her athletic journey this past weekend as first year Ashley Corcoran (Broussard, La.) completed her first Half Ironman race at the 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman, held on Sunday, June 8. The event, hosted in Cambridge, Md., is considered one of the most competitive long-course triathlons on the East Coast, drawing over 2,000 athletes from around the country.

The 70.3-mile race, consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and a 13.1-mile run, was a major step up from the sprint-distance format Corcoran raced during the collegiate season last fall. While the Galladuet triathlon team is currently in its summer offseason, Corcoran used the opportunity to take on a personal goal.

"Of course, it's obvious that the distance is considerably longer than any race I've done before," Corcoran shared. "But my training last season prepared me to be able to push myself. I also wasn't intimidated by the distance because I enjoy longer races. This was a challenge I was excited to take on."

While Corocoran expected the swim to be the toughest leg of the race, the reality of the day brought a different surprise. "I love running so I didn't expect the half marathon to be the hardest part, but running after a long swim and even longer bike made it tough to keep going, especially when it felt like I had hit my limit."

Despite the physical and mental hurdles, Corcoran powered through and crossed the finish line in 7 hours, 34 minutes, and 17 seconds, a strong performance in her debut at the Half Ironman distance.

Corcorant wasn't the only member of the Bison Triathlon team on the course. Coach Brian Bennett also competed at Eagleman, making this his third appearance in Cambridge. Although the two raced separately, the shared experience fostered an added sense of support and camaraderie.

"I am inspired to see my athletes taking their passions to new heights," says Bennett. "When my athletes take on a new challenge, it leads me to want to be a better coach and give my athletes better tools and resources to be successful in all areas of life." Bennett, who finished in 5 hours, 44 minutes, and 9 seconds, shaved over 15 minutes off his previous best time at the event.

For both Corcoran and Bennett, the day wasn't just about completing 70.3 miles, it was about growth, resilience, and setting new goals.

"While I'm proud of what I accomplished today, I wasn't satisfied with the time I received so I'll definitely be taking on another 70.3 Ironman race in the future," Corcoran said. "I want to keep pushing myself to do better."

Detailed Results for the Eagleman 70.3 can be seen here. The Gallaudet University Triathlon team begins its competition season on September 6, and practice begins in mid-August. Stay connected for more stories from the Gallaudet triathlon team as they prepare!
