AUSTIN, Texas – Gallaudet University senior offensive lineman John Scarboro (Austin, Texas) was selected to the 2024 Academic All-America® Division III Football teams, as selected by the College Sports Communicators.
Scarboro was named to the second team from Gallaudet, the world's only university with programs and services specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students. Scarboro is the one of two representatives from the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) as Alfred State College linebacker Silas Egenlauf was named to the second team.
Scarboro is one of 51 honorees named to two different teams from around the country in Division III football where 239 schools field teams. The 51 members of the 2024 Academic All-America® Division III Football teams have at least a 3.50 GPA, with eight student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA. The entire Division III team had a cumulative average GPA of 3.82.
Scarboro, a business administration major, posted 3.53 grade point average and was named to the 2024 D3football.com All-Region 1 Third Team Offense for a second time in his career. The Austin, Texas, native is a four-time ECFC All-Academic selection and was honored as the 2024 ECFC Offensive Lineman of the Year after his standout senior campaign. Scarboro was a four-year starter for the Bison and earned three ECFC All-Conference First Team honors. For the 2024 season, Scarboro was a semifinalist for the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy. He also served as a three-year team captain.
Scarboro becomes Gallaudet's second football player to earn Academic All-America® honors as he joins Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Famer Adham Talaat (2013 - First Team, 2012 - Second Team). Talaat was the first player in Gallaudet history to be named to an Academic All-America® first team, first to earn multiple Academic All-America® honors and first to earn consecutive Academic All-America® honors.
Aaron Syverson from Saint John's University, was picked Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division III football.
To be eligible for College Sports Communicators Academic honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at their current institution and be nominated by their athletic communicator/sports information director. A new requirement that started in 2023-24 is student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games/contests played or must start in at least 66 percent of the games/contests/matches.
Gallaudet Associate Athletic Director for Communications Sam Atkinson, a College Sports Communicators Past President, nominated Scarboro for this honor and has helped Gallaudet athletics increase its Academic All-America totals, tenfold, in his 15 years at the helm. Gallaudet has earned 21 Academic All-America selections in program history since the inception of the awards in 1952. Nineteen of the 21 honors have come in the last 14 years as GU earned at least one every year for six years straight (2012-17).
