INDIANAPOLIS – Gallaudet University senior Hannah Wetzel (Fremont, Calif.), a member of the 2023-24 Bison women's track and field program, is one of many nominees for the 2024 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
Established in 1991, the award recognizes female student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in their community, in athletics and in academics throughout their college careers.
The NCAA has stopped sharing statistics about the Woman of the Year school nominees unlike previous years when you knew more about the group at-large.
Wetzel is Gallaudet's fifth NCAA Woman of the Year nominee as she joins Lexi Hill (2023), Emelia Beldon (2022), Hannah Neild (2019) and Elena Ciccarelli (2015).
Wetzel was a five-year letterwinner on the women's track and field team and participated in both indoor and outdoor seasons. Wetzel earned the 2024 United East Women's Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year awards, she finished her career with 14 all-conference honors and eight USTFCCCA All-Region honors. This past March, Wetzel picked up 2024 USTFCCCA Women's Indoor Track and Field All-America Second Team accolades for the high jump.
The Physical Education and Recreation major graduated Cum Laude in May 2024. Wetzel was on the Dean's List six different times between 2018-24 and was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society. She was also a 2023-24 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honoree and United East All-Academic standout. Off the court, Wetzel was active in the Delta Epsilon Sorority and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Next, conferences will select nominees from the pool of school nominees. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.
The selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division from the Top 30 and announce the nine finalists in November. From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the 2024 NCAA Woman of the Year.
The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the Woman of the Year will be named at the NCAA Convention. The 2025 Convention will take place in January in Nashville.
