WASHINGTON – The largest Bison Classic field competed on a picturesque day in the nation's capital at the Thomas O. Berg Track on the campus of Gallaudet University as the Bison co-hosted with Howard University.
The Bison women's track and field team finished 10th out of 11 teams as a small but competitive squad participated in throwing and long-distance events against a deep regional field that consisted of Division I, II and III programs.
In the throwing events, sophomore
Mackenzie Schirg (Factoryville, Pa.) accounted for all of Gallaudet's six team points. Schirg finished third in the javelin with a top toss of 31.81 meters and was seventh in the discus (28.67 meters).
First-year thrower
Tori Cushshon (St. Louis, Mo.) placed 16th in the shot put (8.40 meters) and added an 11th-place mark in the discus (22.06 meters). Sophomore
Sara Duncan (Mesa, Ariz.) was 13th in discus (7.75 meters) and 22nd in the shot put (4.85 meters).
On the sun-drenched track, Gallaudet's distance group gained valuable experience against tough runners in their respective events.
Junior
Olivia Armstrong (Rotterdam, N.Y.), who is set to graduate this May, clocked a time of 25 minutes and 45.33 seconds in the 5,000 meters to finish ninth on Senior Day. First-year
Jala Furdge (Brandon, Miss.) led the way in the 1,500 meters with a time of 6:23.03 in 18th place.
Prior to the start of the running events, the GU athletics department and track and field program paid tribute to their graduating seniors. Armstrong was GU's lone senior on the women's team.
Howard squeaked out the team win with 124 points as the Bison won by one point over George Washington University in second with 123 points. The Revolutionaries got disqualified in the 4x100 meter relay due to a baton handoff outside the exchange zone. A legal finish in that event would've given GWU the win.
UP NEXT
Gallaudet will complete its regular-season schedule next Saturday, April 18, at the Eastern Shore Challenge hosted by Salisbury University.
Gallaudet graduating senior Olivia Armstrong was recognized by her coaches prior to the start of the running events at the 2026 Bison Classic.
