MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Gallaudet University first-year sprinter
Oceana Brown (Miami, Fla.) made a splash at the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor National Championships here Saturday night under the lights at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Brown finished fifth overall in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.35 seconds.
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse sophomore Lauren Jarrett won the race with a personal best time of 23.81.
After a three hour lightning and rain delay, Brown raced out of Lane 1 and hung with the main pack of sprinters throughout the race. She was the top first-year runner as the field only featured two freshmen. North Carolina Wesleyan freshman Kamiyah Wooten finished right behind Brown in sixth (24.37).
Brown becomes Gallaudet's first track and field athlete to earn All-American honors in their first-year. She is the first Gallaudet women's track and field All-American since
Betsy Bachtel earned two honors (3,000- and 5,000-meter runs) at the 1986 championships.
Washington University-St. Louis won the 2024 team national championship with 71 team points. Wisconsin-La Crosse took second place (47.5 team points) to edge out Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who finished third (47).
Brown earned four team points to place Gallaudet tied for 58th place with eight other schools. That is the highest finish for the Bison women's team at NCAA nationals during Coach
Byron Moore's tenure at the school.
